Mid-Summer Moments to Support Social-Emotional Growth
Hello Providers,
We are midway through summer, and it’s the perfect time to pause, notice the growth happening around us, and continue nurturing the emotional well-being of the children in your care. Even during relaxed summer days, small, intentional SEL practices can anchor children in safety, connection, and joy.
Here are July-friendly SEL strategies to support your children’s social-emotional growth this month:
Mindful Moments Outdoors Take advantage of warm weather to practice simple mindfulness outside—listening for birds, feeling the breeze, or noticing the colors in nature. These pauses help children build self-awareness and learn to find calm in their environment.
Storytelling for Emotional Awareness Use summer downtime for group storytelling focused on feelings. Create a simple story prompt (e.g., “A time you felt brave”) and invite children to add to the story or act it out, building emotional vocabulary and empathy along the way.
Practice Gratitude Rituals Start or end your day by sharing one thing you’re grateful for together. This small practice helps children notice positives, strengthening resilience during big summer feelings or transitions.
Reflect on Social Wins Mid-summer is a great checkpoint: Ask your group, “What have we learned about being kind friends so far this summer?” Reflect together and highlight small social successes, reinforcing the skills children are growing.
